This distinguished event is being organised to honour two eminent founding members of WASD for their outstanding academic leadership, global research contributions, and long-standing commitment to sustainable development.

Emeritus Professor of Work and Employment, University of Stirling, Scotland

Both honourees have made exceptional contributions to research, policy development, and international academic collaboration, significantly advancing the mission and vision of WASD since its inception and the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This online ceremony will bring together distinguished academics, researchers, professionals, and invited guests from around the world to acknowledge their remarkable achievements and enduring legacy in the field of sustainable development.

Professor John Adams
Distinguished Professor of Economics
Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, UK

Professor Adams is a distinguished research degree supervisor at the School of Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. His academic journey began with a degree in Economics and Public Policy from University of the West of Scotland, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from University of Glasgow, and culminated in a PhD in Manpower Planning awarded by the Council for National Academic Awards. Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Adams has held numerous influential roles, including Director of the China-EU Research Centre at Edinburgh Napier University and Economic Policy Adviser to Age Concern–Help the Aged (Scotland). His extensive research contributions in economic development have been widely published in both national and international journals. He has co-authored several textbooks, served as an external examiner at leading institutions across the UK and internationally, and undertaken consultancy for a broad range of public and private sector organisations. His work has had a profound impact on development policy and practice, particularly in Africa, where he contributed to capacity building through the MSc Programme in Investment Promotion and Economic Development. Professor Adams continues to inspire as a dedicated supervisor and researcher, nurturing the next generation of scholars. His long-standing association with WASD, as a founding supporter, associate editor, and active contributor, reflects his deep commitment to advancing sustainable development.

Professor McQuaid holds an outstanding academic record, with qualifications from Lancaster University, the London School of Economics, and a doctorate from Harvard University. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has contributed extensively to research and policy in areas such as employment, employability, ageing populations, sustainability, and economic development. With over 100 academic publications, his work has significantly influenced both scholarly thought and public policy. Professor McQuaid has served as a policy adviser to numerous public bodies and has led major research initiatives, including directing the Employment Research Institute at Edinburgh Napier University. His expertise has been sought by prominent organisations such as the European Commission, UK and devolved governments, the British Council, and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. A Fellow of several prestigious institutions, including the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce, his contributions exemplify academic excellence combined with real-world impact. As a founding member of WASD, his intellectual leadership and commitment have played a vital role in shaping its vision and global engagement.
