SUSTAINABILITY (7): Recent developments in research and teaching towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

University Global Ranking: Reality or Myth- Rethinking Quality, Excellence, and Global Competitiveness in Academia

Online International Conference and Journal Special Issue    REGISTRTAION
Wednesday 5th November 2025 (09:30 - 14:30 UK Time)

Following the success of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd , 4th, 5th and 6th conferences in the series, this conference will focus on the “University Global Ranking: Reality or Myth” captures the growing debate around the legitimacy, fairness, and actual value of global university rankings. It challenges target audiences to question whether these rankings truly reflect the quality of education, research, and impact of institutions or whether they are shaped by selective, Western-centric metrics that create myths about excellence. “Rethinking Quality, Excellence, and Global Competitiveness in Academia”, shifts the focus toward a broader, more inclusive understanding of what constitutes academic success. It encourages higher education stakeholders to move beyond narrow ranking criteria and rethink how global academic excellence should be defined and pursued.

We invite all academics and professionals from Higher Education Institutions (HEI) (universities, colleges and research institutions) and private sector to join us in this global conference to explore innovative strategies, collaborative initiatives, and transformative approaches that empower educational leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to accelerate progress towards the acceleration of the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the conference, selection of WASD Top Experts will present their recent reach on SD and answer questions about their future research and studies in the subject.

The Race for Rankings: A Global Scenario

Over the past two decades, universities worldwide have increasingly aligned their strategic goals with performance indicators used in global rankings such as the QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE), and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). These rankings often prioritise metrics like research output (especially in English-language journals), faculty-to-student ratio, international collaborations, and institutional reputation. As a result, many universities, especially in developing countries (DCs) have redirected their focus and resources toward ranking-related indicators. For instance, they invest heavily in research publication incentives, international faculty recruitment, and high-visibility partnerships, sometimes at the cost of local relevance and inclusive education. In DCs, national policies and funding frameworks have been restructured to support universities aspiring to climb the global rankings ladder. This “ranking race” has created an environment where institutions compete not only for academic prestige but also for global visibility and student enrolment which often adopt superficial changes that fit the ranking frameworks rather than fostering deep educational reforms.

Special Issue: World Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Sustainable Development (WJEMSD)
"University Global Ranking: Reality or Myth- Rethinking Quality, Excellence, and Global Competitiveness in Academia"

Initiatives

SDGs KSA Universities Initiative (SDGsKSAUNi) is official approval by H. E. Mr. Youssef bin Abdullah Al-Bunyan, KSA Minister of Education and followed up by the recent Official Circular sent by H.E. Professor Dr Bassam bin Abdullah Al-Bassam, Secretary General of the Council of Universities Affairs on Thursday 26 December 2024 to all Universities’ Presidents, recommending SDGsKSAUNi to all universities and research centres in KSA. The initiative aims to bring together all universities and research institutions in KSA and comet them together and with universities from across the world in a global forum (SDGs Universities) to collaborate and reconnect with the discourse of Sustainable Development (SD). SDGsKSAUNi will therefore help KSA universities and research institutions to play a critical role, enabling KSA reap the benefits form the global growth in the knowledge economy particularly for the country’s Digital Natives (Youth) and achieve Saudi Vision 2030 and the UN Agenda 2030 and its 17 SDGs. SDGsKSAUNi aims to critically examine a number of issues relating to the role and relevance of universities and research institutions in KSA to the contemporary discourse and Vision 2030 towards KSA sustainable inclusive knowledge-based development such as the role of KSA universities in supporting and enhancing the process of economic and social development in KSA; identify all major obstacles that Saudi universities face and most importantly how can these obstacles best be overcome; and what is the new role(s) of Saudi universities in the post Covid-19 era. SDGsKSAUNi also aims to improve the research within KSA universities to address the significant demand for evidence-based research across the world. It is therefore aims to provide practical recommendations and actions to help transform the way KSA universities conduct and use research to achieve the UN SDGs, and the way KSA universities access and benefit from the global data freely available for use by leading international organizations such as the UN, World Bank, etc. The Initiative will work closely with various KSA universities to address the following key issues in their contribution to Vision 2030 and KSA’s efforts to achieve the UN Agenda 2030 and its SDGs: how Saudi universities see the role of STI in service of the Agenda 2030?; how do KSA universities reflect the SDGs in their own research activities?; and do KSA universities believe that the HE system in KSA is properly using scientific research in finding solutions to KSA’s problems?
