SUSTAINABILITY (7): Recent developments in research and teaching towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The World at Crossroads: Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience Policies and Solutions

Online International Conference REGISTRTAION
Wednesday 6th May 2026 (09:30 - 14:30 UK Time)

Following the success of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd , 4th, 5th and 6th conferences in the series, this conference will focus on the ongoing War in the Middle East and its direct and indirect impact on the world Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience.

The conference brings together researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators at a critical moment for both the Arab region and the wider world. This conference is important as it provides a dedicated platform for addressing these region-specific challenges through collaboration, knowledge exchange, and strategic partnerships. It seeks to bridge the gap between research and implementation, promote regional cooperation, and accelerate the deployment of practical and scalable solutions tailored to the Arab context. By convening diverse stakeholders, the conference aims to support evidence-based policymaking, drive innovation, and advance a just and inclusive energy transition. The conference highlights a shared regional and global responsibility: to transform energy systems, strengthen climate resilience, and secure a sustainable and prosperous future for the Arab world and beyond.

Aims of the Conference

  1. To address climate change challenges specific to the Arab region.
  2. To support the transition from fossil fuel dependence to diversified, low-carbon energy systems.
  3. To promote the development and deployment of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind.
  4. To facilitate knowledge exchange among regional and international experts.
  5. To strengthen collaboration between governments, industry, and academia in the Arab world.
  6. To bridge the gap between research, innovation, and real-world implementation.
  7. To explore emerging technologies such as green hydrogen and carbon capture in the regional context.
  8. To enhance energy security, resilience, and sustainability.
  9. To support equitable energy access and sustainable development across Arab countries.
  10. To inform policy frameworks and national climate strategies.
  11. To accelerate investment and financing in sustainable energy projects.
  12. To contribute to regional and global climate goals.

We invite all academics and professionals from Higher Education Institutions (HEI) (universities, colleges and research institutions) and private sector to join us in this global conference to explore innovative polices and strategic solutions, collaborative initiatives, and transformative approaches that empower policymakers, and stakeholders to accelerate progress towards the acceleration of the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the conference, selection of WASD Top Experts will present their recent reach on SD and answer questions about their future research and studies in the subject.

Climate change is no longer a distant concern - it is an immediate and intensifying challenge, characterised by rising temperatures, increasing water scarcity, desertification, extreme weather events, and growing pressure on ecosystems and communities across the Arab world.

At the same time, energy demand in the region continues to rise due to population growth, urbanisation, and economic development. This presents a complex challenge: how to sustain economic growth and energy security while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Many countries in the Arab world remain heavily reliant on fossil fuels, yet they also possess some of the world’s greatest potential for renewable energy, particularly solar and wind.

Despite notable progress in clean energy initiatives, several barriers persist. These include dependence on hydrocarbons, gaps in policy and regulatory frameworks, limited infrastructure for renewable integration, financing constraints, and challenges in scaling innovative technologies. Water–energy–food security interlinkages, climate vulnerability, and the need for economic diversification further complicate the transition. In addition, priorities such as grid resilience, energy equity, and the adoption of emerging solutions—including green hydrogen and carbon capture—require urgent and coordinated regional action.

Conference Topics

  1. Climate change impacts, mitigation, and adaptation in the Arab region
  2. Renewable energy development (solar, wind, and emerging regional opportunities)
  3. Energy storage and grid integration in hot and arid climates
  4. Green hydrogen production and export potential in the Arab world
  5. Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) in hydrocarbon-based economies
  6. Energy efficiency in buildings, desalination, and industry
  7. Water–energy–food nexus and resource sustainability
  8. Smart grids and energy system resilience in desert environments
  9. Sustainable cities and climate-resilient infrastructure
  10. Climate policy, governance, and regional cooperation frameworks
  11. Climate finance, sovereign funds, and green investment in the Middle East and North Africa
  12. Energy access and sustainable development in less-developed Arab regions
  13. Decarbonisation of oil, gas, and industrial sectors
  14. Circular economy approaches in resource-intensive economies
  15. Digital transformation in energy systems (AI, IoT, smart technologies)
  16. Biodiversity, land degradation, and environmental protection
  17. Public awareness, education, and community engagement in climate action

Initiatives

SDGs KSA Universities Initiative (SDGsKSAUNi) is official approval by H. E. Mr. Youssef bin Abdullah Al-Bunyan, KSA Minister of Education and followed up by the recent Official Circular sent by H.E. Professor Dr Bassam bin Abdullah Al-Bassam, Secretary General of the Council of Universities Affairs on Thursday 26 December 2024 to all Universities’ Presidents, recommending SDGsKSAUNi to all universities and research centres in KSA. The initiative aims to bring together all universities and research institutions in KSA and comet them together and with universities from across the world in a global forum (SDGs Universities) to collaborate and reconnect with the discourse of Sustainable Development (SD). SDGsKSAUNi will therefore help KSA universities and research institutions to play a critical role, enabling KSA reap the benefits form the global growth in the knowledge economy particularly for the country’s Digital Natives (Youth) and achieve Saudi Vision 2030 and the UN Agenda 2030 and its 17 SDGs. SDGsKSAUNi aims to critically examine a number of issues relating to the role and relevance of universities and research institutions in KSA to the contemporary discourse and Vision 2030 towards KSA sustainable inclusive knowledge-based development such as the role of KSA universities in supporting and enhancing the process of economic and social development in KSA; identify all major obstacles that Saudi universities face and most importantly how can these obstacles best be overcome; and what is the new role(s) of Saudi universities in the post Covid-19 era. SDGsKSAUNi also aims to improve the research within KSA universities to address the significant demand for evidence-based research across the world. It is therefore aims to provide practical recommendations and actions to help transform the way KSA universities conduct and use research to achieve the UN SDGs, and the way KSA universities access and benefit from the global data freely available for use by leading international organizations such as the UN, World Bank, etc. The Initiative will work closely with various KSA universities to address the following key issues in their contribution to Vision 2030 and KSA’s efforts to achieve the UN Agenda 2030 and its SDGs: how Saudi universities see the role of STI in service of the Agenda 2030?; how do KSA universities reflect the SDGs in their own research activities?; and do KSA universities believe that the HE system in KSA is properly using scientific research in finding solutions to KSA’s problems?
